Hydrant Testing Notice; Begins Week of April 15

HYDRANT TESTING

WEEK OF APRIL 15, 2013

This notice is to all residents of the City of Poughkeepsie who utilize City water –

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department will be servicing and testing the City fire hydrant system.  This system is directly linked to the drinking water supply.

Be further advised that during the testing period, the water is safe, but should be run until it is clear; use caution when doing white laundry-it is recommended that you should wait a twenty-four (24) hour period after the testing has been completed in the vicinity of your neighborhood.

Within the next three (3) weeks, hydrants in the southeast section of the City will be tested: 

  • Main Street – South to the City Limits
  • South Hamilton Street – East to the Town of Poughkeepsie

Fire Safety Reminder for College Students and Landlords

On the upcoming anniversary of the tragic Fatal Fire on Fairview avenue in the Town of Poughkeepsie ( 1/22/12), The City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department is urging all college students and landlords of college students residing in the City of Poughkeepsie to make sure all Fire Safety rules and regulations pertaining to student housing and New York State Fire and Safety codes are being observed by both students and Landlords. This includes smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in all living and sleeping areas. Fire extinguishers in all cooking and heating areas, self closing doors where required, no supplemental heating units such as kerosene or electric to supplement heat systems. Suspicious Fires on the City’s Northside, Reward Offered for Info

Over the past 19 months, the City of Poughkeepsie Fire and Police Departments have been investigating multiple suspicious fires in the Harrison, Grant, Bement, Winnikee and North Hamilton Street areas. To date, there have been 10 fires that all are similar in nature and confined to a concentrated area on the northside of the City.

These suspicious fires began on June 29th, 2010 on Bement Ave and have continued to date.

The similarities of all of these fires are twofold; they have all been set outside the building in the area of back porches or stairs and they are mostly concentrated in a 4 block area, centered around the Harrison Street vicinity.
