Poughkeepsie Arts Commission is looking for a member to serve. Commission members must be city
residents and either a working artist, arts professional or member of the
community interested in the arts.
Those wishing to be considered for the position on the Public Arts Commission can send an email to [email protected] or can be dropped off to the City Chamberlain’s Office Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The commission was created in July of 2016 by Mayor Rob Rolison to advocate for the arts and raise awareness of local cultural offerings. The Hudson Valley has a rich artistic legacy dating back more than a century and the arts leave a multi-million dollar impact on Dutchess County economy.

The City of Poughkeepsie will begin issuing
municipal ID cards on Friday, June 7, a move designed to strengthen community
relations, improve public safety and foster civic pride.
City officials believe municipal IDs will be
particularly helpful for those who currently lack government-issued IDs, such
as a driver’s license. Such barriers, according to the measure passed
unanimously by the Common Council last year, leave “thousands
of individuals — including immigrants, homeless people, transgender people,
senior citizens, young people, and those who have been formerly incarcerated —
without access to critical services, benefits, cultural, educational, and civic
City officials see a public-safety benefit to the ID
program as well. They note that residents who
cannot produce proof of identity are often reluctant to report crimes to the
police that they suffer or witness.
Businesses are also encouraged to offer discounts to city ID holders.
The cards include the person’s
photograph, name, date of birth, address, ID card number, and card expiration
are available to residents 14 years of age and older and will be valid for four
years. Municipal ID’s costs $10 for
adults and $5 for those 14-17 years and seniors.
They are issued at the
City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 62 Civic Center Plaza, on Monday and
Fridays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. People have to establish
proof of identity and residency to obtain a card. Applications are available in
English and Spanish.

The City of Poughkeepsie
is currently seeking residents who would be interested in serving as a member
of the Board of Assessment Review.
The Board of Assessment Review
consists of three to five volunteers who have at least a general knowledge of
property values in the community. The Common Council members vote to appoint
The BAR’s sole purpose is to arrive at a fair and impartial decision regarding the assessment on property. The BAR conducts hearings in order to evaluate grievance applications and make a determination of assessed value based on evidence submitted by the property owner.
The BAR meets once a year, the fourth Tuesday in May – “Grievance Day”. However, members are usually required to participate in additional hearings and private deliberations. Additionally, Section 523 of the Real Property Tax Law requires BAR members attend a training session before they can participate in the hearing and determination of complaints.

Under the new City Charter, adopted by voter referendum in November 2016, there will be a Salary Review Commission every four years to make recommendations to the Mayor and Common Council regarding salaries for elected officials.
The Salary Review Commission includes seven members. Three are appointed by the Mayor, three are appointed by the Common Council, and one is selected by the members of the Commission.
The Commission will serve from June 2018 and issue recommendations by January 1, 2019. The new salary levels will then be established by a majority vote of the Common Council.

Participatory budgeting (PB) is a different way to manage public money, and to engage people in government. It is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget.
