Q. What is the difference between the City of Poughkeepsie and the Town of Poughkeepsie?

The City and Town of Poughkeepsie are separate municipalities with different governing bodies. While the City has a Mayor, the Town’s top official is the Town Supervisor. More information on the Town of Poughkeepsie may be found at www.townofpoughkeepsie.com.


Q. Where can I obtain a copy of the City Charter?

A paper copy of City Charter is available through the City Clerk office. The City Charter is also available online.


Q. Where is City Hall located?

City Hall is located at 62 Civic Center Plaza, along Market St. between Mill Street and Mansion St.


Q. How do I find out who my Common Council representative is?

The first step is determining which ward you reside in. A ward map is available for download on the Forms and Applications page. Once you know which ward you reside in, you can visit the Common Council page and find your representative by ward.


Q. When does the Common Council meet?

A.
Common Council Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month, except holidays and the months of July and August. The Common Council meeting dates are also posted on the Calendar page. Meeting agendas are available for download on the Forms and Applications page.


Q. Does the City of Poughkeepsie offer public transportation?

The City operates and maintains a local bus system. For schedules and other information please call The City of Poughkeepsie Transit System at (845) 451-4118. The Dutchess County Loop, a bus system that covers multiple municipalities in Dutchess County, also stops in Poughkeepsie. For more information about The Loop, please call (845) 485-4690.

The Poughkeepsie Train Station, which services the Metro North Railroad (Hudson Line) and Amtrak, is located at 41 Main Street, at the Route 9 interchange. For more information about the station, please visit www.mta.info.

Payments can be made at the Finance Department in City Hall or left in the drop-box in front of the Police Department. You can also mail your taxes to :

Parking tickets can be paid online with most major credit cards. Paid parking tickets can also be dropped off in the box in front of the Police Department.
