The City of Poughkeepsie Seeks City Residents Interested in Serving on the Board of Assessment Review

The City of Poughkeepsie Common Council is currently seeking residents who would be interested in serving as a member of the Board of Assessment Review.

The Board of Assessment Review consists of three to five volunteers who have at least a general knowledge of property values in the community. The Common Council members vote to appoint BAR members.

The BAR’s sole purpose is to arrive at a fair and impartial decision regarding the assessment of the property. The BAR conducts hearings in order to evaluate grievance applications and make a determination of assessed value based on evidence submitted by the property owner.

The BAR meets once a year, the fourth Tuesday in May – “Grievance Day”. However, members are usually required to participate in additional hearings and private deliberations. Additionally, Section 523 of the Real Property Tax Law requires BAR members to attend a training session before they can participate in the hearing and determination of complaints.

Grievance Day – May 26, 2020

Pursuant to Section 508 & 525 of Real Property Tax Law and Executive Order 202.22, dated April 20, 2020, Notice is hereby given that the Board of Assessment Review for the City of Poughkeepsie, County of Dutchess shall hear and determine complaints in relation to assessments on May 26, 2020 between the hours of 3:45pm and 8:00pm by appointment via Virtual Meeting Platform. The Board of Assessment Review will then file a copy of the determination with the City Chamberlain to become a matter of public record.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, property owners who wish to grieve their 2020 Tentative Assessments are strongly encouraged to submit their grievance application (RP-524) and supporting documentation to: City Assessor, 62 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 one week prior to Grievance Day, May 26, 2020.
