City Seeks Residents to Serve on the Board Of Assessment Review
The City of Poughkeepsie is currently seeking residents who would be interested in serving as a member of the Board of Assessment Review.
The Board of Assessment Review consists of three to five volunteers who have at least a general knowledge of property values in the community. The Common Council members vote to appoint BAR members.
The BAR’s sole purpose is to arrive at a fair and impartial decision regarding the assessment on property. The BAR conducts hearings in order to evaluate grievance applications and make a determination of assessed value based on evidence submitted by the property owner.
The BAR meets once a year, the fourth Tuesday in May – “Grievance Day”. However, members are usually required to participate in additional hearings and private deliberations. Additionally, Section 523 of the Real Property Tax Law requires BAR members attend a training session before they can participate in the hearing and determination of complaints.
Any City residents interested in being a member of the Board of Assessment Review are asked to contact City Chamberlain Deanne Flynn at [email protected] or by mail at 62 Civic Center Plaza, Poughkeepsie New York 12601 prior to Friday, March 22, 2019
