City of Poughkeepsie Detectives are tasked with investigating incidents, crimes and missing persons. Detectives interview witnesses and suspects, write reports, evaluate evidence and arrest suspects. Information collected in criminal cases is prepared and presented in various court proceedings for criminal prosecution.

Crime analysis is a law enforcement function that involves systematic analysis for identifying and analyzing patterns and trends in crime and disorder. Information is gathered on a citywide level and refined to individual streets when and where necessary.
The crime analyst is a full time civilian position within the Police Department.

The evidence division is under the direction of the detective division. Members assigned to the evidence division are responsible for the cataloging and housing of evidence and property collected by the members of the police department.

The juvenile division is under the direction of the detective division. Members assigned to the juvenile division are tasked with investigations related to juveniles. Juvenile workers assist detectives and work the Poughkeepsie City School District in various capacities. Additionally, members assist with missing persons, bicycle registrations and child car seat safety.
Walk-in registrations are done at the Juvenile Division office on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10AM to 2PM. Applicants must bring Identification and Proof of Purchase along with the bicycle to be registered. If no proof of purchase is available, then person must complete Affidavit of Ownership. Registration of bicycles over 20 inches is required for all City residents.
Child Car Seat Program
The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department offers child car seats and installation to income-eligible citizens. The car seats are made available through a grant from the New York State Child Passenger Safety Program to all City residents meeting the income guidelines and criteria listed below:
- Applicant must be a City of Poughkeepsie resident with proof of residency (Utility bill with City address)
- Income Verification – present a valid benefit card or other Department of Social Services document
- Applicant must be the registered owner of the vehicle in which the car seat is installed
- Photo ID is required (driver’s license or benefit card)
